Merry Christmas everyone

Merry Christmas everyone.

Merry Christmas everyone.

Today, we are celebrating the one of the most significant day of the year that is Christmas. Christmas has been celebrated for more than two thousand years after Jesus was born in Nazareth in a tavern (Nevertheless, the significance of Jesus’ birth is the most important not the exact date, month, or year when Jesus was born). The life of Jesus became the centerpiece not just only for the Christians but also who know Jesus’ life only never believe that he is the messiah. For the past thousands of years, the celebration of Christmas has evolved to conform the culture and needs of a specific country, like here in the Philippines where we celebrate Christmas longer than elsewhere.

The celebration of Christmas should focus not only on enjoying the fruits of consumerism like buying new stuffs for your own consumption or giving to someone whom we know but also we should not forget that the essence of Christmas should be centered on remembering value of forgiveness to someone whom we argued for a year or past as knowing how to forgive would give us a lesser burden on our mind every time we face the battles of an unfair life. Celebrating Christmas should be a reminder among the leaders not just in our country but also elsewhere that caring the needs of the people should be above all over their own personal interests in order to achieve a peaceful, orderly, and well-off world. Celebrating Christmas should be a reminder also to everyone that everything in life can be achieved if we never strive to get it of what we want as everyone of us has different achievement, capability, instinct , and resource that everyone should know to deal with.

For the celebration of this Christmas 2012, I would like to say that peace and prosperity should come among us not only for today’s Christmas day but also in our daily lives.

Before we celebrate the Christmas tomorrow, I have to tackle this issue about the preventive suspension of Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia for the next six months by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) last 20 December.

Gwendolyn Garcia has been suspended for the next six months by the DILG in accordance to an administrative case filed by the deceased Cebu Vice Governor, Gregorio Sanchez. The complain stated that Gwendolyn Garcia abused her authority by 1) encroaching on the appointing authority of the complainant over employees of the Office of the Vice-Governor, 2) slashing the budget of the Office of the Vice-Governor by 61%, 3) stopping the publication of the Legislative Gavel and non-payment of the honoraria of the publication staff, 4) transferring the funding of the Legislative Research and Codification Project from the Office of the Vice Governor to the Office of the Governor, 5) hiring consultants without prior authority from the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, 6) withholding the overtime pay of the personnel of the Office of the Vice Governor, and, 7) issuing a check worth P10,000,000.00 without prior authority from the SP. (Click here for the full text of the suspension)

The suspension order was signed late July of this year by the deceased DILG Secretary Jessie Robredo, however the enforcement was only realized last Wednesday for unknown reasons which I suspected that the suspension order had to be delayed until December, so that Gwendolyn Garcia could not use the financial resources of the Cebu Provincial Government to propel her younger brother, Pablo John to the governorship this coming election in May and to give the Liberal Party-backed candidate, Hilario Davide III an advantage over Pablo John Garcia.

The governor post was taken over by Agnes Magpale, the vice governor and candidate for the same position with Hilario Davide as her governor this coming election. When the suspension order was enforced, Gwendolyn Garcia refused to abide the suspension order and have to stay herself in the governor’s office until this moment of writing this blog entry. Gwendolyn Garcia had to mobilize her supporters from all over the Cebu Province with my estimation of over hundreds of supporters attending the vigil in support for her last Wednesday. On the other hand, acting Cebu Governor, Agnes Magpale has been staying at the Legislative Complex behind the main building of the Cebu Provincial Capitol until this moment and able to perform her duties as acting governor like shutting the Sugbo TV off the air.

As a registered voter of Cebu Province, in order to assure the rule of law, I think it would be preferable for Gwendolyn Garcia to flee the Cebu Provincial Capitol and let Agnes Magpale to perform her duties as acting governor, so that the services that the Cebu Province have provided to the constituents including me, not be compromised. Whether it was unjust for the part of Gwendolyn Garcia, she need to abide the suspension order, so that other elected officials who might be suspended in the future, not easily defy the order from the top just to avoid facing the charges in proper courts. This is my wish for Gwendolyn Garcia for Christmas.

The world is still alive

Mayan Calendar. (voxxi.com)

Today, 21 December, the world has been trolled by the fears of some people that the world would end today as the 5,125-year-long cycle of the Mayan calendar ends today. Those who do not have a background on Mayan civilization have been fooled by some doomsayers that the world ended today but in reality, the 5,125-year-long cycle of the Mayan calender just ends today and the another cycle (the 14) has started today that will end on 26 March 2407. Even the Mayans does not buy the notion of the doomsayers that the world would end today but instead, they simply keep their respective lives going on as usual.

It has not been the first time in my life that I have been bombarded with the end of the world doomsday predictions like in 1999-2000 New Year’s eve, where I remembered even my fragile mind that the world would end on the first of January 2000, where any computer systems that cannot read the year 2000 and beyond would have debugged, but it did not happen. On the 6 of June 2006, when I was approaching the secondary education that time, the same end of the world doomsday had never been realized.

Likely the world will not end for now as the survival not just in our human civilization, but also our universe depends of the ability to expand to accommodate the increasing number of stars and galaxies in our universe until at such point where it will crunch and eventually, the black hole which will signal the absolute end of our universe that we are living right now.

Yesterday (Philippine time), I awoke with the news of another mass shooting incident in schools in the United States through my Facebook and Twitter accounts. It was really a sad and a devastating event for the families of victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Connecticut, United States.

Like from the previous mass shooting incident in Virginia Tech in 2007, the gunman named Adam Lanza had mental problems who should have been medicated before he was able to shoot 28 persons including himself and his mother.

I think the problem here was not because the killer used a semi-automatic rifle but his parents who never took care of him after his parents separated in 2009, that brought Adam Lanza to release his anger through killing innocent children, himself, and his mother. Adam Lanza could use other weapons to kill anyone, himself, or her mother because of his traumatic experience after his parents got separated.

It is a sweeping generalization to blame firearms alone with the massacre, rather we should blame the killer, killer’s parents, and the school who never assured safety of the innocent children and teachers.

Condolences to the families of victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre. The killer should go to hell.

RH bill passes on second reading

The House of Representatives yesterday, after hours of giving the present representatives their stand on Reproductive Health Bill, passed the second reading that is a crucial step for the passage of a certain bill in the House of Representatives with the vote of 113 for the RH bill, 104 for against the bill, 3 for abstain, and 62 were absent.

The partial passage of that bill gave a manifestation that our society is really divided on the issue of checking the population growth rate of our country, one of the highest in Southeast Asia. The debate of that bill took fourteen years before it gave a partial passage yesterday as the proponents and the against gave their respective arguments on how to control our high population growth rate, how to educate the people in regards of contraception, and the highly debated was how the government should allocate the budget for reproductive health to the people.

My stand on the Reproductive Health Bill or RH bill is for the passage provided that the government should not spend taxpayers’ money for free contraceptives to the people but they should only give the people an education on contraception and responsible parenthood like the inclusion the right steps of using contraception and responsible parenthood in public schools.

However, the passage of the Reproductive Health Bill will not be a panacea of our laggard economic growth and development of our country as the bill will only address the short-term high population growth rate while maintaining the broken current economic system as the current ones prevents massive job creation that would have discouraged the people from marrying someone earlier but later which would have lessen the chances of making babies, therefore lesser population growth rate in a long-run.

Manny Pacquiao lost

Juan Manuel Marquez punched Manny Pacquiao’s right chin that brought the latter into a humiliating defeat.

After eight years of frustration, Juan Manuel Marquez was able to defeat Manny Pacquiao through a counter (a lucky punch if you ask the others) right punch into Pacquiao’s right chin that brought the surprise defeat of Manny Pacquiao.

After losing the previous two and drawing one in three fights, the bigger and stronger Marquez prevailed this time.

I did not expect that Juan Manuel Marquez could able to knock Manny Pacquiao out from the right side as the fight progressed, Pacquiao was able to counter some powerful punches of Marquez during the third and fourth rounds that brought the former of being knocked down during at the middle of the third round.

That fight before the end of the sixth round was similar with other three wherein there were no convincing victory for both sides and could have been repeated with that fight had Marquez never released his powerful right punch into Pacquiao’s right chin. I was projecting with a draw before the powerful punch by Marquez because both sides were able to exchange punches to each other as Marquez experienced bleeding in his face while Pacquiao as the fight progressed by, was starting to lose coordination and strength as the result of series of counter punches by Marquez.

That fight won through accuracy by Juan Manuel Marquez of finding the loopholes of Manny Pacquiao like weak defense beyond the latter’s face as Marquez found timely execution of his powerful punch into Pacquiao’s right chin. Manny Pacquiao could have continued the fight until the end and maybe won had he maintain his coordination and strength that he regained during the fifth round.

After that fight, I realized that it is the time for Manny Pacquiao to throw his towels in order to preserve his legacy in boxing and focus in other fields where he could flourish like preaching.
